Backbiting is something that is prohibited in every religion. It is basically to speak of someone negatively in front of others, no matter how seemingly insignificant the comment may be. I know that I have done this to others multiple times, and may God forgive me for those sins, and may the people whom I have done this to forgive me as well. I will try to add quotations from Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism soon, but for now, here is what Islam has to say about it.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Do you know what is backbiting?'' The Companions said: "Allah and His Messenger know better.'' Thereupon he said, "Backbiting is talking about your (Muslim) brother in a manner which he dislikes.'' It was said to him: "What if my (Muslim) brother is as I say.'' He said, "If he is actually as you say, then that is backbiting; but if that is not in him, that is slandering.''

"O you who believe! Shun much suspicion for truly some suspicion is a sin. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You hate that so hate the other. And keep your duty to Allah. Surely Allah is Forgiving and the most Kind." (Quran 49:12)

"He who truly believes in Allah and the last day should speak good or keep silent." (Bukhari and Muslim)

"If anybody pledges to me that he will keep his tongue unde control, guard his chastity, will not speak ill of others nor indulge in slander or backbiting and refrain from adultery and similar sins, I shall assure him of Paradise." (Bukhari)

Abu 'Abdur-Rahman Bilal bin Al-Harith Al-Muzani (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "A man speaks a good word without knowing its worth, Allah records for him His Good Pleasure till the day he will meet Him; and a man utters an evil word without realizing its importance, Allah records for him His displeasure till the day he will meet Him.''
